چکیده

In the pursuit of efficiency there is continued and developing interest in the subject of winglets and novel designs such as Blended Wing Body and Oblique Flying Wing. Winglets may exist in many modes, ranging from endplates, through folded wing tips to complex upper and lower surface partial chord devices. We have developed a design process that is directly applicable to the design of wings and winglet combinations. A set of target conditions is established. These may be, for example, minimum liftinduced drag, minimum wave drag, a known structural loading or pitching moment control. The design process is iterative and, in general, is driven towards the idealised spanwise load distribution for minimum drag. A degree of pitch control has also been demonstrated on selected configurations. The method may be used to design from “scratch” or in the corrective sense to optimise a current design for new requirements at the design point. The method has been applied to the design of several configurations of current interest, conventional A340 type wing, Blended Wing Body and Oblique Flying Wing. Winglets have been simulated by folding the outer wing through various angles. The technique has proved to be easy to use. It is enlightening as it gives, at every stage, a feel for what is happening in terms of camber development, pressure distributions and Centre of Pressure location. Favourable characteristics of the configuration can be enhanced whereas those that are not beneficial can be minimised or avoided as the design progresses.

Tip Extensions, Winglets, and C-wings: Conceptual Design and Optimization

Conceptual wing design analysis methods are combined with numerical optimization to find minimum drag wings subject to constraints on lift, weight, pitching moment, and stall speed. Minimum drag tip extensions and winglets are compared using nonlinear optimization. The minimum drag trapezoidal tip device depends on the ratio of the maneuver lift coefficient to the cruise lift coefficient, altho...

Nonplanar Wing Concepts for Increased Aircraft Efficiency

1. Summary Nonplanar wings offer the possibility of reduced drag compared with planar wings of the same span and lift. However, aircraft are not compared on the basis of drag with fixed span and lift, making the integration and assessment of nonplanar wing concepts complex. This paper deals with some of these issues. A brief review of several concepts from winglets to ring wings is followed by ...

Commercial Aircraft Performance Improvement Using Winglets

Aerodynamic drag force breakdown of a typical transport aircraft shows that lift-induced drag can amount to as much as 40% of total drag at cruise conditions and 80-90% of the total drag in take-off configuration. One way of reducing lift-induced drag is by using wing-tip devices. By applying several types of winglets, which are already used on commercial airplanes, we study their influence on ...

NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF MAVs FLAPPING WINGS IN UNSTEADY CONDITIONS

Today, Flapping Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAV) are used in many different applications. Reynolds Number for this kind of aerial vehicle is about 104 ~ 105 which shows dominancy of inertial effects in comparison of viscous effects in flow field except adjacent of the solid boundaries. Due to periodic flapping stroke, fluid flow is unsteady. In addition, these creatures have some complexities in kin...

Determination of the Maximum Aerodynamic Efficiency of Wind Turbine Rotors with Winglets

The present work contains theoretical considerations and computational results on the nature of using winglets on wind turbines. The theoretical results presented show that the power augmentation obtainable with winglets is due to a reduction of tip-effects, and is not, as believed up to now, caused by the downwind vorticity shift due to downwind winglets. The numerical work includes optimizati...
